Prepares students for careers in respiratory care and eligibility for the Registered Respiratory Therapist exam.

Program requirements

About the Program

The Respiratory Therapy program at Jackson College is a two-year program leading to an Associate in Applied Science degree. The curriculum includes both classroom instruction and hands-on clinical experience in approved clinical education affiliates. The program prepares students for employment in the field of respiratory care, with positions available in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and outpatient settings. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to take the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) exams to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).

There are special admission requirements for the respiratory care program, and entry is competitive, based on a point system that considers grades in prerequisite coursework and the interview process. Students must complete specific courses and meet GPA requirements before applying.

Respiratory Care Techniques I

Introduces students to basic respiratory care procedures, including oxygen therapy, humidity and aerosol therapy, and patient assessment techniques.

Cardiopulmonary Pathophysiology

Explores disease processes affecting the lungs and heart. Covers etiology, signs and symptoms, diagnostic testing, and treatment modalities.

Clinical Practice I

Supervised clinical practice where students apply respiratory care techniques with patients in a healthcare setting. Emphasis on basic care and documentation.

Perinatal & Pediatric Respiratory Care

Focuses on the respiratory care needs of newborns, infants, and children. Includes neonatal ventilation, congenital conditions, and family-centered care.

Students who earn the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Respiratory Therapy will be well-prepared for a variety of career opportunities in the field of respiratory care. Graduates can pursue roles as respiratory therapists in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and outpatient settings. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

Provides advanced respiratory care, manages ventilators, and monitors patients with chronic or acute cardiopulmonary conditions.

Pulmonary Function Technologist

Conducts diagnostic tests to assess lung function and assist physicians in diagnosing respiratory disorders.

Neonatal/Pediatric Respiratory Therapist

Specializes in caring for infants and children with breathing disorders in neonatal intensive care units or pediatric hospitals.

Home Respiratory Care Specialist

Delivers and manages respiratory therapies and equipment in patients’ homes, providing education and support for long-term conditions.
