New Applied Technology Center opening set for Feb. 16

Facility to train future utility, HVAC professionals

Jackson College invites the community to a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, Feb. 16, at 5 p.m., celebrating the opening of the new Applied Technology Center on Central Campus. The event will include brief remarks and light refreshments.

As communities grapple with aging infrastructure and an increasing demand for reliable utility services, Jackson College is positioning itself at the forefront of workforce development. The College’s utility and new HVAC-R programs are designed to meet critical industry needs and prepare students for in-demand careers.

“This new facility reflects what’s possible when education and industry work together,” said Jamie Vandenburgh, dean of Workforce, Technical and Professional Education. “The Applied Technology Center gives students access to modern equipment, real-world training environments, and clear pathways into essential careers that keep our communities running.”

About the Center

The new state-of-the-art Applied Technology Center represents a significant step forward in advancing Jackson College’s mission to support regional workforce and economic development while expanding its utilities programs. Developed in collaboration with key industry partners, the Applied Technology Center features flexible, innovative learning spaces that provide hands-on, real-world training opportunities. The facility includes two program “bay” areas, one with an extra-tall roof to accommodate indoor utility poles. An outdoor training area supports a variety of utility work, including burying cables and operating a bucket truck.

“The Jackson College Applied Technology Center is a bold investment in the future of our students and the strength of our region. With flexible, hands-on learning spaces, supporting utilities, energy, HVAC, renewable energy, and Industry 4.0, including the kind of indoor/outdoor training our employers are asking for, students will graduate ready to step confidently into high-demand careers,” said Jackson College President, Dr Daniel J. Phelan. “This building is about opportunity: building talent, strengthening local industry, and helping Jackson County thrive for decades to come.”
