Annika Schmittlein is already a licensed EMT and firefighter with Sand Lake Volunteer Fire Department, and a CNA at Lenawee Medical Care Facility. The 2025 high school graduate chose Jackson College and the JC Lenawee Campus for its nursing program — a decision backed by real-world experience in emergency response and patient care. “I wanted to stay local and have that community college experience,” she said. “Jackson was the more affordable option, and it just made sense.” Schmittlein’s interest in emergency care began early. While attending the LISD Tech Center in high school, she earned her EMT license at just 16 years old. The hands-on experience confirmed her passion “I absolutely love it,” she said. “My professors here have been incredible.” One instructor stands out: Brian Gemalsky, her statistics professor. “He’s my all-time favorite. His energy is great. I’ve never really enjoyed stats until this class, even though I’ve always been good at it.” Schmittlein’s deeper motivation for pursuing nursing comes from a personal place. A family member was born with a congenital heart condition, and the nurses who cared for her left a lasting impact. “They’re the only reason she’s with us today,” she shared. “That really sparked my interest in nursing.” Balancing coursework with emergency calls and CNA shifts can be challenging, but she manages it well. “When I’m at the fire department and not on call, I can spend time getting my work done. It’s worked out pretty well.” When asked if she would recommend Jackson College to others, her answer is an enthusiastic yes. “It’s a typical college experience, and the professors really value your education. Plus, it’s a much more affordable route.” She is currently completing her nursing prerequisites and plans to continue her education after Jackson. For now, she’s focused on learning, serving her community, and preparing for a future career she’s passionate about.
