Having previously worked several years as a certified nurse assistant, she always valued the medical field for its stability, but she was ready for a new direction with the possibility of eventually working from home. Inspired by her husband, she applied to the medical coder-biller with help from the Michigan Reconnect tuition program. She credits her instructor, Mary Douglas, for making the experience exceptional. As a visual learner, Brittany appreciated being welcomed into the in-class portion after initially signing up online. The flexibility to work at her own pace was essential as a mom to a busy 4-year-old. She finished the program in October and will take her national exam soon. She is already working at a doctor’s office in Jonesville, a position recommended by her instructor. For future students, she encourages going in with an open mind, giving yourself credit, and remembering that even when the material feels overwhelming, it gets better. “The instructors are there to help, no matter what time of day. Don’t feel like you can’t ask questions,” she said.
