Changing lives through education

Jackson College’s Corrections Education Program stands as a transformative force in the lives of incarcerated individuals across Michigan. The CEP operates in seven correctional facilities throughout the state, with 789 currently enrolled. This comprehensive initiative equips students with crucial academic skills and practical knowledge that will serve them upon release, while simultaneously nurturing something equally vital — hope for a different future. College courses challenge students’ minds while preparing them for meaningful employment after incarceration. The program also cuts the chances of returning to prison significantly.

“There is a direct correlation between recidivism and education. People who get an education while incarcerated are much less likely to go

back to prison,” said Lynn Wood, Corrections Education Program director at Jackson College. “When these students get out, they can find sustaining employment to take care of themselves and their families. Education plays a great part in reducing recidivism.”

By providing incarcerated students with pathways to degrees and certificates, the college acknowledges their potential for personal growth and successful reintegration into society. It demonstrates that education’s transformative power can reach even those in the most challenging circumstances.

FACT: Research shows that inmates who participate in correctional education programs have 43 percent lower odds of returning to prison than those who do not, and that every dollar spent on prison education saves four to five dollars on the costs of re-incarceration.

For 20 years I had been in prison and there were no opportunities to go to college. To educate myself, the only thing I could do was read books and hold on to concepts and the ideals inside of them. So, this opportunity to go to college meant everything to me. I appreciate the entire Jackson staff for all that they’ve done to get me across the finish line. Thank you! Dennis Vesey
