Meet Harrison James

Going to Jackson College may not have been Harrison James’ first choice, but as it turns out, it was his best choice.

After a false start at a private, out-of-state school, James returned home to Hillsdale County in search of something close to home and affordable. Jackson College’s Hillsdale LeTarte campus proved to be the right fit. “There is a surprising amount of infrastructure packed into a small building. It’s easily accessible,” he said. From 2019 to 2025, he took classes in Hillsdale, online, and at Central Campus.

About a year into his studies, James received an opportunity at WCSR Radio Hillsdale. Long-time radio personality Bob Flynn heard about James’s interest in broadcasting and invited him to join the team. As James advanced, he took on more responsibility, eventually taking over Flynn’s afternoon time slot. He also does commercial production and calls football games.

Balancing work and school kept James busy and helped shape his future direction. He recently completed his associate degree and plans to transfer to the University of Michigan–Dearborn to pursue a bachelor’s degree in communications and marketing — studies that complement his radio career.

Outside of work and school, James enjoys watching college football and visiting major stadiums when he is able. He also likes to read and unwind by playing video games with friends, interests that help him stay connected and recharge amid his busy schedule. While his path may have taken an unexpected turn at the beginning, James has found his niche. He encourages others to persist. “A lot of people I started with didn’t stick with it. College is worth it; I got a lot out of it, and now I have a degree to show for it.”
