For his commitment to community service and advocacy for working families, Johnson received Jackson College’s 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Medal of Service Award. Johnson has held leadership roles with United Way as a past board chair and current member, served on the Skilled Trades Task Force, and contributed to multiple City of Jackson commissions. His work has strengthened community programs and expanded opportunities in the skilled trades. In addition to his community service, Johnson has run for the State Legislature to give working-class residents a stronger voice.“I’m humbled,” Johnson said. “The work I do in the community isn’t for accolades. I try to be what I needed when I was younger and make surepeople are treated equitably.” The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Medal of Service Award honors individuals who exemplify Dr. King’s values through leadership, service, and a commitment to equity and justice. Jackson College congratulates James Johnson Jr. on his remarkable service and lasting community impact.The award will be presented at the Jackson College Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, at the Potter Center’s Robert Snyder Dining Commons. A social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Tickets are $50 for general admission and $30 for students with valid school ID.
