LENAWEE COUNTY EARLY COLLEGE LAUNCHES

Lenawee County high school students will soon have an unprecedented opportunity to jump-start their futures through the new Lenawee County Early College (LCEC) program, a collaborative initiative between Jackson College, the Lenawee Intermediate School District (LISD), and local public school districts.

Set to welcome its first cohort in fall 2026, the program offers students a structured path to earn up to 60 college credits while still in high school with a fifth year included, while still participating in activities in their home district.

The idea for LCEC began in spring 2024 when Director of Jackson College Lenawee Zak McNitt and LISD Assistant Superintendent Jenny Heath recognized a gap in local early college options.

“We saw a real need,” McNitt explained. “I began meeting with principals and superintendents across the county, and momentum started building. Once the LISD leadership, including Jenny Heath and Mark Haag, said yes, we knew it was time.”

By October 2025, Lenawee superintendents voted to move the project forward. The program mirrors
the successful Jackson County Early College model. Beginning in fall 2026, it expects to enroll 9th, 10th and 11th graders from across the county.

Many districts cover all or most expenses, making early college a major financial benefit for families. “This is a safe, structured way for students to start college,” McNitt emphasized. “Early college students take classes with extra support, at little or no cost to families, and with close collaboration between the high school and our advisors.”

JC President Dr. Dan Phelan noted the program “blends high school and Jackson College coursework so students can graduate with their diploma plus up to 60 transferable college credits, an industry credential, or an associate degree. The LCEC saves families time and money and opens exciting new doors for Lenawee County students.”
