He had a history of issues with learning and staying focused, but with the opportunity to get an education while being incarcerated, college courses from Jackson College were the right choice. “I was really grateful for all of the professors. They didn’t shortchange our learning,” Garceau said. “It was a really good education. I got three associate degrees and a certificate from Jackson, then completed my BBA from Siena Heights University. Today, I’m completing a graduate program at Wayne State for computer science. The associate degrees I got from Jackson were really my launchpad.” Today, Garceau is working as a volunteer coordinator at Detroit’s Pope Francis Center while he finishes his master’s degree. Finding employment can be difficult with a prison record, but again, having an educationhelped him land the job.
