Lauren Bates

Lauren Bates didn’t wait until high school graduation to build her future.

Lauren Bates was a high school student at Columbia Central High School and decided to dual enroll through Jackson County Early College to get a head start on earning college credits. Not only did this jumpstart her higher education goals it allowed her to significantly reduce the financial stress of college.

“It was overall a very positive experience,” she said. “It taught me a lot about time management. It gave me confidence and I feel like it prepared me for my future.”

That head start made the transition to Jackson College a natural next step. After finishing her dual enrollment, Bates returned to campus to pursue nursing

“I’ve always wanted to be a nurse and I just really enjoy taking care of people,” she said. “I was already familiar with campus, and I had a good advisor so it just seemed like the best path. I really like the nursing program. It’s challenging but rewarding. I would say I’ve learned a lot both in the classroom and clinically.”

Lauren credits the support of her family and her academic advisor for helping keep her on track.

“I feel like Jackson College has set me up for success, for giving me the opportunity to be dual-enrolled and start my college career early,” she said.

The 20-year-old has three semesters left before earning her degree and becoming a registered nurse with plans to possibly further her education.
