Accessible Content

Use these guidelines and resources to create content that is accessible, clear, and inclusive.

Making content accessible doesn’t have to be complicated. These basics apply across most content types – webpages, documents, courses, and more.

Use headings to organize content

Use built-in headings (like Heading 1, Heading 2) to break up content so it’s easier to read and navigate. Most platforms include heading options in the toolbar (often labeled “Heading” or “Styles”) when editing content.

Examples
❌ One long paragraph with no sections
Financial Aid
How to Apply
Important Deadlines

Add descriptions to images (alt text)

Write a short description of what an image shows so all users can understand it. Most platforms provide a field to add alt text when uploading or editing an image.

Examples:
❌ No description or “image123.jpg”
“Students studying together in the library”

Use clear, descriptive links

Avoid “click here.” Instead, use link text that explains where the link goes. Most platforms allow you to add or edit links using a link icon in the toolbar.

Example:
View the course schedule

Readable Text (contrast)

Use dark text on a light background and avoid color combinations that are hard to see. Most platforms have preset colors—stick with high contrast combinations.

Example:
❌ Light gray text on a white background
✅ Black text on a white background

Captions (videos)

Include captions so people can read what is being said in videos. Most video platforms (like YouTube or Canvas) provide options to add or auto-generate captions.
