Practical Nursing Certificate (PN-C)

The PN-C program at Jackson College prepares students to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) through a focused curriculum of classroom instruction, labs, clinical experiences, and simulations. Graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN licensing exam to begin their careers in practical nursing.

Spring Semester: November 1

The Jackson College’s Practical Nursing – Certificate Program is approved by Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) located at 511 W Ottawa, P.O. The following guide sheet lists the courses required for the Practical Nursing Certificate (PN-C). It serves as a comprehensive overview of the classes you’ll need to complete as part of the program, including prerequisites and core nursing courses.


Admission to the PN-C program at Jackson College is highly competitive and requires completion of specific coursework, testing, and documentation. Follow the steps below to ensure your application is complete and submitted by the November 1 deadline.

1. Apply to Jackson College

Submit a completed Jackson College application. Be sure to select Practical Nursing – Certificate (PN-C) as your program of study. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.

2. Meet with a Student Success Navigator

After applying, you will receive an email with further instructions, including how to schedule an appointment with a Student Success Navigator. During this appointment, you will:

  • Help you develop an academic plan
  • Review prerequisite and foundational course requirements
  • Guide you through the admission process and timeline

3. Complete Placement Assessments

As directed by your navigator, complete placement assessments in writing, reading, and math. These results will help determine your readiness for required coursework. Students with limited science backgrounds may need to take additional preparatory courses.

4. Submit Official Transcripts

Send official transcripts from all previously attended colleges to the Jackson College Records Office. Use the National Student Clearinghouse for transcript requests.

  • Transcripts must be received by November 1
  • If transcripts are not on file by the deadline, your application will be considered invalid

It is your responsibility to confirm that transcripts have been received.

5. Complete Required Coursework

To be eligible to apply, you must have completed or be enrolled in one of the following by the November 1 deadline:

  • BIO 132 – Human Biology
    or
  • BIO 253 & BIO 254 – Human Anatomy & Physiology I & II

minimum grade of 2.5 is required in the applicable course(s). Points will be calculated for either BIO 132 or BIO 253 & 254, not both.

6. Take the Kaplan Admissions Assessment Test

You must complete the Kaplan Admissions Test as part of the application process.

  • Must be completed by November 1
  • Minimum composite score of 52% is required to earn additional admission points
  • Only two attempts are allowed, with a 30-day remediation period between them

7. Complete and Submit the PN-C Program Application

Once you have met the eligibility requirements, your Student Success Navigator will assist you in completing the secondary PN-C program application.

Important: Your navigator will electronically submit the signed application to the Nursing Coordinator’s Office. You and your navigator will receive a confirmation email once it has been submitted.

8. Meet Technical Standards

You must meet the Technical Standards for Admission as outlined in the nursing program packet. These include physical, cognitive, and behavioral abilities essential for safe and effective nursing practice.
