Clinical Obligations

Students admitted to the Radiography Program will begin performing clinical rotations during their second semester in the program. The program will assign all students to clinical assignments when they are admitted to the program. All clinical rotations will be assigned by the program clinical coordinator while the student is in the program. The first summer semester in the program is designed to prepare new students for clinical rotations that begin in the fall semester.

All students admitted to the Radiography Program are required to meet certain requirements that ensure their safety as well as the safety of patients in the hospital sites where they will perform clinical rotations. Students are required to perform a background check and drug screening. They are also responsible for completing the program health screening form as well as completing the required immunizations of the hospital sites where they will be placed. Students are also required to meet the technical standards and essential functions of the program. All students will perform CPR training during their first semester in the program in preparation for beginning clinical rotations.

Student rotations are performed in 8 hour shifts typically during day-shift hours. Students are also required to perform off-shift hours occasionally as well not to exceed 25% of their scheduled rotations.

An example of the required hours of the program is listed below:

  • First Fall: Clinical Tuesday and Thursday(16 hrs) for 15 weeks
  • First Spring: Clinical Tuesday and Thursday(16 hrs) for 15 weeks
  • Second Summer: Clinical M,T,W,R,F(40 hrs) for 10 weeks
  • Second Fall: Clinical M,W,F(24 hrs) for 15 weeks
  • Second Spring: Clinical M, W, F(24hrs) for 15 weeks

All students must adhere to the requirements of the clinical site they are placed at. Students are not allowed to hold patients or imaging equipment during procedures. Students must not perform repeat images without the direct supervision of a technologist. Mobile imaging procedures can only be performed with the direct supervision of a technologist. When performing imaging procedures students must be directly supervised but may perform images with indirect supervision (technologist immediately available) when performing procedures that they have earned competency in.

Students are responsible for providing evaluations to their supervising technologist as required by the program. Students are also responsible for turning in radiation monitoring badges on time as directed by the program faculty.

If a student will be absent from a clinical rotation due to illness or for any reason, they must message the clinical coordinator as well as their clinical preceptor prior to their shift beginning. The student must also responsibly coordinate making up missed days with their preceptor and clinical coordinator.
