Jackson College Advantage offers opportunity for full tuition for more students

June 12, 2023

Helping to make a college education a reality for more students, Jackson College today unveiled the Jackson College Advantage plan, providing a “last-dollar” scholarship to qualifying students.

The Jackson College Advantage scholarship will pay for tuition and student service fees beyond those covered by other financial aid sources. Even with available financial aid, the out-of-pocket expense of a college education can prove too much for many students.

The scholarship is available to 2023 high school graduates from Jackson County high schools and approved in-district high schools (see website for list). Students completing a GED in 2023 are also eligible. They must enroll full-time in an eligible associate degree program, take 12 credit hours each semester, and maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average. They must have a household income of less than $75,000 annually, and after completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), have an expected family contribution (EFC) below $11,000. Students will not have to apply – funds will automatically be applied to students who meet these requirements. Funding for the Jackson College Advantage comes, in part, from the Jackson College Foundation.

Not only will Jackson College Advantage help students but the larger community as well. Jobs today require more education and training than ever before. As more people complete a college degree, the community benefits from a highly skilled workforce. A more highly skilled workforce can attract new businesses to the area and create positive ripple effects throughout the county and region. This effort also coincides with the State of Michigan 60 by 30 initiative to increase the number of working-age adults with college credentials to 60 percent by 2030.

“Jackson College is committed to student success.  Research confirms that access and affordability are the biggest hurdles to success,” said President Daniel J. Phelan, Ph.D. “We are always looking for ways to assist students so that they can achieve their goals, because we are fully convinced that education can transform lives. Whenever a student graduates, we all benefit.”
