‘Sylvia’ promises heartfelt comedy as student production returns to Jackson College

April 15, 2024

They say a dog is man’s best friend… but what happens when one’s wife isn’t quite on board? Join Jackson College for a hilarious, heartfelt comedy about a marriage and a dog, “Sylvia,” coming April 26-28 in Michael Baughman Theatre, Potter Center.

“Sylvia” marks the College’s first student production in several years. Directed by theatre Instructor Sara Anne Tomczak, this feel-good comedy delivers laughs when we need it. “Our production, especially in this time in history, highlights the importance of companionship. We ask our audience, where do you extend your love? Companionship binds us together in both expected and unexpected ways.”

About the Play

Originally produced on Broadway, “Sylvia” involves a couple, Greg and Kate, who have moved to Manhattan after 22 years of raising a family in the suburbs. When Greg brings home a dog he’s found in the park – Sylvia – their relationship is thrown off-balance. Sylvia offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age while becoming a rival for affection for Kate. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives.

Tomczak says many heartfelt moments will connect with the audience.

“It is in the familiar faces of family and friends, where we find comfort and joy, and in the chance encounters with strangers, where we discover new connections and understanding. We ask the audience to cherish the companionship they have, whether expected or unexpected, for it is a gift that enriches our lives in ways we may never fully comprehend. Either way, keep your head up because you might not know who needs your love,” Tomczak said.

Staging her first production at Jackson College, Tomczak is thrilled with the newly renovated Michael Baughman Theatre. With a cast and crew of about 20 students and community members, they are thrilled and excited for the show to go on!

“We can’t wait to have the community come in and see how we bring this newly renovated space to life,” she said.
